Market for Goods: When Manchester industrialist began selling cloth in India , they put labels on the cloth bundles . The label was needed to make the place of manufacture and the the name of the company familiar to the buyer . The label was also to be a mark of quality . When buyers saw 'Made In Manchaster' written in bold on the label , they were expected to feel confident about buying the cloth . But in Late 19th Century manufacturers were printing calenders to popularise their products .
Advertisement, labelling and calendars were used to popularise products by both British and Indian manufactures. Advertisement through newspapers, magazines and hoardings were used by the producers to expand their market. Advertisement makes products appear desirable and necessary. They try to shape up the minds of people and create new needs in them. Advertisements played a very significant role from the very beginning of the industrial age, for developing a new consumer culture.
